I think we can all agree that Bernie Sanders stole the show during the 2021 Inauguration with his fabulous mittens. I mean, it doesn't get much better than a thick, comfy pair of mittens on a cold winter day. And, naturally, as soon as I saw them, I just knew I had to crochet them. So keep reading to learn how to make your own pair, too!

Bernie's mittens have already become one of the biggest highlights of 2021. We even had a rare snow day here in North Carolina last week and these mittens kept my hands nice and toasty as I played with my dog in the snow.

If you are interested, I have also made a printable, ad-free version of the pattern available on my Etsy! And taking Bernie's lead, I will donate half of all proceeds made from selling the ad-free pattern to Meals on Wheels. So, check it out!

Without further ado, here is the free crochet pattern for Bernie's Mittens:
Materials:
  • RED HEART Coffee (A) or Dark Brown – 1 Skein
  • RED HEART Café Late (B) or Light Brown – 1 Skein
  • RED HEART Buff (C) or Tan – 1 Skein
  • RED HEART Aran (D) or Ivory – 1 Skein
  • Size H (5 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
  • Ch- Chain
  • Sc- Single Crochet
  • St- Stitch
  • Sl st- Slip Stitch
  • Sc Dec- Single Crochet Decrease

Notes:
  • This is a unisex design. I wanted hands of all sizes to fit inside these mittens, so they may be on the larger side for some.
  • When seaming, I seam over the corners to give it the rounded effect. I also leave the corners tucked in when I turn it right-side out if it still looks too boxy.
  • The wrong-side is simply the side that will face inside the mittens. I usually leave all my tails on this side
