Something that I see is super popular this summer is denim skirts. While I spent my entire childhood trying to dodge the ones Mama bought me, I have been very reluctant to buy a pair even though they look so cute on everyone else! That’s how I got the idea for this DIY denim skirt! Instead of buying a brand-new denim skirt, why not make one out of an old pair of jeans

The best part about this DIY is that it is very easy to do. Not to mention, nearly everyone has an old pair of jeans lying around. If not, I got this pair for a little over $3 at Goodwill! This DIY denim skirt is very affordable compared to some of the price tags in name brand stores.

While I used a sewing machine to make my DIY denim skirt, it’s not necessary to make your own skirt out of an old pair of jeans. You can sew them by hand if you want to, or, better yet, use fabric glue! The result of this DIY is a very durable denim skirt that you can certainly wear out of the house to the beach, concerts, or just a shopping day at the mall all summer long.

Without further ado, here is the tutorial:

DIY Jean Skirt Materials:
  • An old pair of jeans
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Denim thread
  • Sewing Machine

DIY Jean Skirt Steps:
  1. To start making your DIY denim skirt, try on your old pair of jeans and decide how long you want the skirt to be. Make a mark along the side of the jeans about an inch below your desired length to allow for a hem or just a margin of error.
  2. Cut the legs off of the jeans at the mark you just made. To ensure that everything is the same length, cut both the front and back of one leg at the same time then fold the jeans and cut the other leg using the first cut as a guide. If you plan on hemming your skirt for a nice, even edge, a cutting in a straight line won’t matter. If you want a natural, distressed edge to your skirt, cut the legs off as straight as possible.
  3. Cut the large, thick hem out of the crotch of the old pair of jeans, completely separating both legs in the middle.
  4. Turn the jeans inside out and, using straight pins, pin the front edges of the legs together. Instead of following along the cut or hem line, lay the jeans completely flat where the outside edges are straight. Take the excess material in the middle and pin it so that whatever overlaps is sticking straight up. Repeat on the back side of the legs. Try the DIY denim skirt on to make sure you didn’t make it too tight.
  5. With the jeans still inside out, sew along the pins on the front side. Then repeat on the back. Cut any excess material that is protruding.
  6. If you want distressed or frayed edges to your denim skirt, stop here. If you want to hem your denim skirt, while the jeans are still inside out, pin the bottom edge of the skirt up about a quarter to half an inch all the way around. The size of the hem will depend on how straight the original cut is. You may need to try the denim skirt on to make sure the hem is even all the way around. I actually hemmed my skirt so that the back would be longer in the front because I am constantly having problems with skirts being long in the front but too short in the back thanks to my large keister.
  7. After the hem is pinned, sew around the entire circumference of the denim skirt. If there is any excess material left, cut it off along with any long threads hanging down. Then, try on your DIY denim skirt to see how it fits!
And that’s it! That’s all it takes to make your own DIY denim skirt from an old pair of jeans. It’s super simple and looks super chic when you are done.
If you make your own DIY denim skirt out of an old pair of jeans this summer, let me know! I’d love to see how yours turns out.

Thank you! I was hoping that you wouldn't be able to tell they used to be jeans at first glance.
