Homemade Coconut Oil Dog Treats Recipes for Dry Skin and Bad Breath

Homemade Coconut Oil Dog Treats Recipes
I don't know about your fur-babies, but this summer, Jasper has some pretty irritating issues. I'm talking about dry skin and bad breath. Between the constant scratching and gnawing and the awful butt breath, he's about to drive me crazy. Not to mention, the constant scratching makes me feel like a bad fur-mama because nothing I have done has helped him feel less itchy. That's how I ended up creating these homemade coconut oil dog treats recipes.
When I first started researching ways to ease his dry skin, the first things I came across was coconut oil. We all know coconut oil is the answer to everything and come to find out, it's safe for dogs to eat! While looking for other foods that were safe for Jasper to devour, I found out that mint was safe for dogs, too! Score!

While those two ingredients alone would make great breath mints for dogs as I found out in this blog post by the DIY Dog Mom, I knew that Jasper would be less than enthused. So I crafted another homemade coconut oil dog treat recipe that would have his attention and it involved his favorite treat: peanut butter.

Ever since Jasper was a rollie pollie of a puppy, I have been giving him peanut butter. When stuffed down in the holes of his chew toys, peanut butter provided me with a much needed reprieve from the constant mental breakdowns that come with having a puppy. He loves it and I love the fact that is keeps him busy. So, into his new homemade coconut oil treats recipes it went!

I opted for the easy way to make homemade dog treats: I combined the liquid ingredients and refrigerated the treats until they were solid. These homemade coconut oil dog treat recipes are super simple and easy to adjust to meet your own dog's preferences (although, if your dog is like Jasper, most any form a treat is fine with them).

I started giving these treats to Jasper about a week ago and, so far, I have noticed a slight difference in his itchiness. While he is still scratching frequently, I have noticed that it seems to bother him less and he is less likely to drop what he is doing to scratch for five minutes straight. I hope that the longer I give him these homemade coconut oil dog treats, the better his dry skin will start to feel!

This recipe makes approximately 24 homemade coconut oil dog treats and only takes 5 minutes to make!
Ingredients:
  • 1/4 C. Coconut Oil
  • 1/4 C. Peanut Butter
  • 2 Tbs. and 2 Tsp. Chopped Fresh Mint Leaves

Directions:
  1. Soften the coconut oil and peanut butter by microwaving them for 30 seconds. If you are just making breath mints, only use coconut oil and cut the amount of mint leaves you use in half.
  2. Stir the two ingredients together and add the chopped up mint leaves (yes, I put mint into his peanut butter treats because I was hoping it would help with the residual peanut butter smell as well).
  3. Pour or pipe the mixture into molds or dollop onto a sheet of wax paper.
  4. Refrigerate the treats for at least half of an hour to get them solid.
  5. Give one or two to your puppy everyday to encourage better breath and moisturized skin. Make sure you store in them in the refrigerator.

Hi, my son is allergic to peanuts/tree nuts so we don't want it in our household so I was wondering what else could you use with the coconut oil for those dog treats?

Hi there! I completely understand. You can use just about any dog friendly food! You could even just use coconut oil and mint. I could even envision using something like gravy or cheese wiz!

Banana would be a great add in for a household with a nut allergy! We have a gluten allergy in our household so we also have to be careful! :)

Just a thought...what about pumpkin purée instead of peanut butter? It’s also good for their stomachs,

I make a version using fresh carrot purée with the mint. My 3 puppers live them.

Hi Penny,
Pet Wellbeing Itch Support Gold, for dog allergies is an excellent.
Our dog went from being on Vanectyl P ( a low dose Prednisone) 10 months out of the year to 2 months out of the year.
Go onto their website. You can even submit questions to Dr. Jan, who was very instrumental in developing the PWB line of products.
Dr. Jan Huntingford is an integrative vet. She is brilliant.
We are fortunate to be able to take our pups to her.

Have you brought your dog to a vet? My dogs digging started when she turned one year old and quickly became severe. A blood test revealed that she had become allergic to everything. All grains, pollens, bugs. You name it. She had to have grain free prescription food and a monthly antigen shot for all of the rest of her 16+ years. You shouldn’t let your dog suffer.

This is a great blog for coconut oil user! I am nuts about ideas what other wonderful antidotes that coconut oil can provide! Growing up in the Philippines, I’ve learned various techniques utilizing coconut oil. As a third world country, we relied upon what Mother Nature’s produced and coconut oil was and still is one of the essential parts of my growing up. I actually learned how to make a homemade coconut oil by watching my Mom. The story behind this was the fact that Mom only cooked homemade coconut oil during Easter Holidays. It was “Beliefs” of Catholic Christianity, that Coconut Oil is made on Good Friday ONLY and the cooking must be synchronized with when Jesus Christ raised from the dead; precisely at 3:00 P.M. and for this reason, the Coconut Oil was being Blessed, and this is where the “Holy Oil” was born. My Mom had a gift of Healing and she would use the Holy Oil and believed to heal...we utilize the extra for cooking, for hair conditioning, face, lips, body lotion, but, I use my store bought, Coconut Oil, infused with echinacea essential and lavender essential oil for my Therapeutic Deep Massage. Pretty much all Organic!

And YES! My darling mix Jack Russel Chihuahua 5 years old loves coconut oil! I would add a table spoon in her homemade dog food which keeps her coat shiny and beautiful! Thank You for allowing me to share my stories about Coconut Oil!

Coconut oil is a cure for just about any minor ailment. I keep it in the bathroom and kitchen. Pets love the taste.
